Why was Revelation 3:2 Project outside Capital Church's sunrise service at the Lincoln Memorial?

If you attended Capital Church’s Easter sunrise service at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC this year, you may have seen signs posted promoting this website and condemning Christian apathy against abortion.  Why in the world would anyone conduct an anti-abortion event outside a Christian worship service?

It certainly wasn’t a protest of Easter or of Capital Church.  Revelation 3:2 Project was there simply because thousands of Christians were expected to attend the sunrise service, and those people need to hear the convicting message Revelation 3:2 Project brings.

Some will argue that a day celebrating our Lord’s resurrection is not the proper time to bring up the subject of abortion.  Our focus should be on Christ and nothing else.  This concern sounds good, but it lacks understanding.

Firstly, though it is right and proper to set aside special days to remember what God has done for us, no particular day is more holy than any other (Romans 14:5, Colossians 2:17) and we must never permit religious observances, however sincere, to keep us from doing what is right (Luke 13:16, Matthew 5:23-24)).  Remember that both times Jesus cleansed the Temple, He did so right before the festival of Passover (Matthew 21:12, Mark 11:15, Luke 19:45 and John 2:14).

Secondly, we should bear in mind that America has been committing genocide against her own unwanted preborn children for more than 43 years, and all this time the overwhelming majority of professing Christians have covered their eyes and stopped their ears.  Sunday to Sunday, year to year, Easter to Easter, we turn the other way while our neighbors, whom Christ loves and commands us to love are sacrificed to the gods of lust, gluttony and sloth.  All around us, every single day, innocent children cry out for justice.  We have been too busy for them, our pro-life convictions notwithstanding.  This is not the way redeemed men and women are supposed to live!

In light of this, what does a Holy God think of our worship?  Is He pleased with the beautiful music, well spoken doctrine and exuberant prayers?  Or does He consider us like unrighteous Israel, to whom He said “I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.” (Amos 5:21)

This is why we felt justified in breaking in upon the joyous atmosphere of Capital Church’s sunrise service with a message of conviction and warning.  Certainly no Christian is perfect, and those in attendance at the service we visited are no worse than any other congregation throughout this land.   Yet a Christian community that worships the giver of life while tolerating life’s destruction, praising God as Savior while refusing to bow their heads to Him as Lord (and have no doubt; this is what we are doing) is at best participating in half-worship.
